“SHIN-ON” solo exhibition by Shuhei MATSUYAMA

14 – 24 January, Opening on Thursday the 15th, from 6:30 pm
Born in Tokyo in 1955, Shuhei Matsuyama was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown, before moving to Italy, where he continued his academic training in Perugia. Since 1991 he has lived and worked in Milan, launching an intense exhibition activity that has led him to present his work in major international contexts, from Venice to Tokyo to New York.
SHIN–ON is the central theme of his artistic research. The Japanese ideogram contains sixteen different meanings: ON refers to sound, while SHIN indicates its multiple qualities and nuances.
The artist’s work thus takes shape as a spiritual inquiry, in which painting becomes the visual horizon of sound. Through artistic gesture, Matsuyama attempts to give form and visibility to his inner vibrations and energies, making the artwork a direct expression of his spirit.
His paintings therefore aim to reveal the relationship between sound—understood in its transcendental dimension—and its translation into image, giving rise to a profound dialogue between auditory and visual perception.
The solo exhibition opening the year 2026, from January 14 to 24, will offer an immersive opportunity to better understand how Shuhei Matsuyama moves through life and art.
“To those who ask me: why do you work? I answer: to grow.
Why do you want to grow? To know myself.
Why do you want to know yourself? To express myself.
Why do you want to express yourself? To be an artist (a human being).
Why do you want to be an artist? To be free.
Why do you want to be free? To experience the joy of life.”
