Group Exhibition – Large Format Exhibition

The third edition of “Oversize”, an exhibition dedicated to large format art, arrives in an extraordinary setting that welcomes us in all its majesty: the Firmafede Fortress in Sarzana.

The project arrives here following its exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Calice Ligure and, prior to that, in Milan at the iKonica Art Gallery, which once again curated the selection of artists for this event.

But why large format? What is the common thread connecting the featured artists? The answer lies in impact: large scale transforms into a truly immersive visual experience for the viewer. The “Oversize” format of these works breaks through the boundaries of the surrounding space, disorients our external reference points, and compels us to step inside the artwork itself. This exhibition was created so that you might feel exactly that: enveloped and captivated by the artists and their visual languages.

At its core, this journey is also a deep homage to the great history of art. Think of the majestic frescoes of the Renaissance or the famous Venetian teleri canvas paintings that transformed grand halls into visual narratives. Consider, too, the drama and wonder of Baroque painting, the monumental representational canvases of the 19th century, and the 20th-century revolution of Jackson Pollock’s Action Painting and Mark Rothko’s Abstract Expressionism, where the massive canvas became a true space of action.

Throughout history, large format has served a precise purpose: political, psychological, and scenographic. In this exhibition, it comes alive once again as an extraordinary medium that transforms mere viewing into an all-encompassing experience.
